I was walking my students past the front doors last Tuesday as the Fed Ex driver was wheeling his cart up the sidewalk. "Whoa!" and "That's a lot of boxes Miss Ryan!" came from my students. There were 12 huge boxes in all. Later I learned that they were all mine. Yankee Candles had arrived!
I must say, I do enjoy the pleasant scent throughout my house as the candles wait to be delivered. The orders arrived promptly, without issue. What a great company and pleasant experience! After profits to Yankee Candle, we raised $700 for Cross-Cultural Solutions! Wow!

"How did you do with the pancakes?"
This question has been common lately, and I do not tire of hearing it. To all of you who have been patiently waiting for updates, thank you for waiting and I apologize for taking so long.
Applebee's was amazing...staff, company, the entire morning. In all, we served 54 pancake breakfasts with pancakes, juice, coffee, tea, and sausage! I am just in such awe of all the people who came out to serve and eat: old friends and new friends. My parents drove up to serve pancakes. My dad can be friends with anyone, and he definitely enjoyed meeting all of the guests...so much that he fell short on his pancake serving duties a couple times! Ha! (I really do not mind!) My mom made a lot of friends, too.
My Charlotte Mommy, Naomi, was a fantastic greeter and banker! I dare to think what I would do without her. Naomi also brought a huge group of friends. Thank you to Annye, Kristee, Jan, Carmen, and Blaire for helping greet and serve. Thank you to all of my school friends for making the trip out so early (especially Jen), and to my old friends who I have not seen for a while. We raised over $600 for CCS and my program costs to Peru.

A teacher's dream: I asked Brooke if I could take a picture of her eating pancakes, and the child bit right in! She is definitely not shy!
We had a raffle table with 10 different raffles. So many people donated services or cakes. We sold a lot of tickets, and I hope had a lot of happy winners!

I was totally exhausted afterwards, but it was totally worth it!

Humbled...
Today is President's Day. Normally a holiday, today was a regular school day to make up for snow days. We have a long road ahead of us until spring break. To make our canceled workdays or holidays more exciting, I am preparing breakfast treats for the PRES staff.
Today was our first breakfast treat day: muffins, scones, and a few brownies for color! How fitting that the table was set up in front of our global initiatives bulletin board.
I collected my things at the end of the day. My co-workers donated $70. Wow!

Yankee Candles!
Yankee Candles is hosting a fundraiser for Cross Cultural Solutions. They will give 40% of the candle sale profits to my program fee! Catalogs and order forms will be available February 21-March 14. The candles will arrive just in time for Spring, Easter, Mothers' Day, Teacher Appreciation, and wedding season.

Breakfast...the best meal of the day!
My first fundraiser has been approved! I am teaming with Applebee's Restaurant in Stonecrest to host a "Flapjacks for Funds" breakfast. The slogan: "Get a short stack for a TALL cause".

The breakfast will be held Saturday, March 12, from 7:30-10:00am. Get the word out! If you know ANYONE in the Charlotte area, invite them to this breakfast!! Tickets will cost $7, and I will start selling them in February. My goal is to see 100 tickets...200 would be super!

The F word
Friends. Family. Fun. FUNDRAISING.
The big 'F' word. I'm going to Peru. Now I need to finance the trip.
In the end, my three-week teaching and volunteer adventure is going to cost $3,547. Airfare and incidentals will probably cost another $1,500. This is where fundraising comes in. I want to share this experience with my family and friends. What I learn in Peru will only make me a better teacher and colleague, improving and enriching our students. Personally, this experience is going to teach me patience, respect, tolerance, and grow my appreciation of cultures and global issues.
I have set up a website to track my fundraising progress. Check back here for information about fundraising events. Maybe something will strike your fancy... Suggestions are always appreciated!
