Confundido means confused in Spanish. My new favorite word. I like how it sounds. I like saying it. I like what it means. And I cannot stop thinking about Pollo Fundido. My Spanish teacher, Sra. Kolarska, cleared up that confusion yesterday, as I seriously thought I was talking about melty, cheesy goodness the whole time.
I had a revelation yesterday. Somehow, the words come out easier and I seem to know what I'm talking about more in Spanish when I am exhausted. I do not know right from left right now; it has been a long week. But I went to Spanish yesterday, and the answers were just rolling off my tongue! Well, maybe not rolling...
So, I know how to ask for information, make a phone call, tell someone that I am sick, name parts of the body, count, and say colors. Oh, and I can get through an airport...sort of...
Maybe I should start playing "Uno" in Spanish. "Rojo dos!" I wonder how to say "wild card"? Confundido might just have to be part of that phrase!

Learning Spanish
My friend Lisa hosted an intervention when I was in middle school. I was invited and attended. She never told me who we were intervening. Little did I know. The intervention was for me.
The intervention was simple, peer pressure and friends telling me why I should change my foreign language choice. All of my friends were going to be learning Spanish, while I was going to be learning French. I chose French because I wanted to be different; it was not a popular class (2 French classes to the 8 Spanish). Even then I wanted to support the little guy, some things never change. I also chose French because I thought the language had a beautiful sound.
My friends argued that everybody was taking Spanish, so should I; they also tried convincing me that Spanish would help me when I grew up because people who spoke Spanish were coming to our country. Psssh! What did they know? I took 7 years of French.
Now, I'm 3 and a half months away from Peru and I'm trying to learn Spanish. Looking back, Lisa was right. Acquiring a new language as an adult is difficult! My mouth plays tricks on me! I hear one thing and say another.
I do notice similar ideas and words between French and Spanish, but I have yet to figure out if knowing a second language is going to help me learn a third language. Someone asks me a question in Spanish and my mind answers it in French. Oh dear!
The Spanish teacher at Porter Ridge, Senora Kolarska, has offered to work with me. Last week, she was teaching me how to roll my 'r'. After numerous grunts, on my attempt, she shook her head and said, "This is no good!" I immediately received a pass to the front of the class!
...private lessons instead of group. I had been practicing for our group lessons at home; she told me not to attempt any more sounds on my own, only under her watchful eye and listening ear. Ouch. Language lessons should come with a warning label: "Do not attempt at home."
All kidding aside, I am very grateful for the time that Sra. Kolarska is offering me to help me learn some basic conversational Spanish in preparation for the trip. My first lesson yesterday was about maneuvering through the airport. I'll let you know how that goes!
